Choose a dining table and chairs as one arrangement. A seating label does not establish that your chosen chairs will fit, and a top that fits the room can still leave too little space to use them. Compare the measured top, support positions and occupied chair footprints.
Start with real chair widths
Draw each chair around the top at scale. Allow for its arms, the position where it tucks in and how it pulls out. Table legs can divide the usable edge into sections. A pedestal may remove corner legs but can still affect feet and knee room. Ask for support dimensions if the drawing does not show them.
Separate seating from circulation
The space for an occupied chair is different from the route behind it. Check the path to the kitchen, outside door and any sideboard while people are seated. If an extending table is under consideration, draw both states and decide where extra chairs will be kept when the table is closed.
Compare surface construction and ownership
Ask about the top, edge, base and finish. Timber, veneer, glass and natural or engineered stone can require different care and handling. Confirm weight, assembly and delivered component sizes. A large one-piece top creates a different access challenge from a table assembled inside the room.
Test an eight-seat label
Place the actual widths of eight proposed chairs around a plan of the table. Check where the legs interrupt the seating positions and whether the end seats conflict with nearby chairs. If the chairs do not fit comfortably on the drawing, the table’s capacity label does not resolve that mismatch.
