Choose a modular sofa by the arrangement you can actually order and use. A collection of separate upholstered pieces is only useful if their dimensions, finished sides and connectors support your intended layout. Start with a room plan, then build a configuration list before comparing coverings.
Identify every component
Ask for a plan that names each end, corner, armless seat, chaise and ottoman. A left arm and a right arm are different components; an armless centre seat may not make a suitable exposed end. Confirm whether the modules are separate order items or a fixed package. Keep the component list with your quote so the supplied arrangement can be checked against the drawing.
Test the arrangement in everyday use
Draw the outer boundary, then add the routes between doors, seating and adjoining rooms. Place the coffee table and any armchair before committing to the sofa. A rearrangeable layout still needs somewhere to put each module. If a piece becomes redundant when the room changes, the original purchase has not automatically become more flexible.
Verify what modular means for this model
Ask how the sections connect, whether exposed sides are finished, whether the chaise can change sides and which configurations the supplier supports. Confirm separate packaged sizes for access. Do not assume future modules will remain available or that a later upholstery batch will match the original colour. These are order-specific questions rather than standard features of every modular sofa.
A useful two-layout test
Draw your preferred everyday arrangement and a second realistic arrangement, such as opening the corner for a gathering. List the modules needed for each. If either arrangement requires an extra end piece or an unsupported connection, ask about it before ordering rather than assuming the modules are interchangeable.
Before you order
- Record the exact model, configuration and covering reference.
- Confirm any important measurement or specification missing from the listing.
- Check delivery components and access separately from the assembled room layout.
Frequently asked questions
Is a modular sofa always reversible?
No. Reversibility depends on the module shapes, finished sides and connection system of the specific model.
Will separate modules fit through my door?
Their smaller size may help, but packaged dimensions and the complete delivery route still need checking.
