Two sofas with the same outside width can provide different amounts of sitting space. Arms, cushions, back shape and frame construction account for part of the difference. Compare usable measurements before deciding which sofa offers the seating you need.
Compare like-for-like widths
Overall width is the maximum outside measurement. Usable seat width is the space intended for sitting between the sides, with the cushions in place. Ask which measurement a listing provides. A rounded arm can also create a different boundary at the cushion than at its widest outside point.
Look beyond the number of cushions
A bench cushion is not automatically a single seat, and several cushions do not guarantee the same number of comfortable adult positions. Compare the actual width, supported sitting positions and how people will use the sofa. A corner cushion can provide different support from a straight section.
Make a practical shortlist
Use a comparison with overall width, usable seat width, seat depth and arm profile. If one field is unknown, ask for it rather than inferring from the photograph. Keep the outer footprint on the room plan even if a narrow arm increases the sitting space within it.
A width calculation
A hypothetical sofa is 220 cm wide with two 20 cm-wide sides. Subtracting those sides leaves 180 cm before any other frame or cushion effects. Another 220 cm sofa with two 10 cm sides leaves 200 cm under the same simplified assumption. Actual usable seat dimensions still need confirmation.
Before you order
- Record the exact model, configuration and covering reference.
- Confirm any important measurement or specification missing from the listing.
- Check delivery components and access separately from the assembled room layout.
Frequently asked questions
Do narrow arms guarantee more comfort?
No. They may change usable width, but comfort also depends on the seat, back and the person using them.
Can I calculate seat width from a photo?
Not reliably. Request the model-specific usable measurement.
